Pedals, Pools and Proud Parents

ree

Today I’m smiling a little extra, because my four-year-old son has officially joined the “big kids club” - he can ride his bike! 🎉 Sure, he still needs to figure out the whole braking part (minor detail, right?), but let’s just celebrate the fact that the wheels are moving forward.

Learning how to pedal and ride isn’t easy for any child, but for him, it’s been an even steeper hill to climb. He gets easily distracted; whether it’s a bird flying overhead, a car passing by, or even just a gust of wind. Yet, despite all the diversions, he persevered. He overcame. And we could not be prouder.

His dad deserves a gold medal too. Rain or shine, he was out there patiently teaching, encouraging, and running alongside. Honestly, we had a moment where we wondered if he’d ever learn. I found something I had written down just back in February — “Would he ever ride a bike?” Reading that today, I couldn’t help but laugh and smile because now he can.

That wasn’t the only worry I had scribbled down. I had also written: “Would he be able to cross the road independently? Would he be able to swim?” These little notes felt so heavy at the time. But now, my hope is renewed. Just yesterday, swim term began, and I wondered if he’d even step into the pool (given the long break in between terms). He hesitated, of course - but in true fashion, he took the plunge.

So here’s to crossing out more “Would he be able to…” items. With God, perseverance, his willpower, and the love and persistence of his dad and I, all things are possible. Also, I am super grateful for the close friends and family who continue to celebrate his victories with us.

Cheers to the little victories that are really the big victories.
